Moody Fall Wedding Colors Inspired by Autumn Landscapes

In the fall, we start to see and feel the changes of the season, allowing room to inspire us creatively again. It is time to step away from the summer pastels to embrace changes and the ability to drip more earthy and warmer tones. When I design for fall weddings, I look for a more specific vibe for each couple; it's not simply a matter of choosing any color and moving on. I want to evoke the feeling of a misty forest with muted, magical moments of an October sunset. I want the color palette to evoke a sense of warmth and elegance as well as vintage intimacy, a modern and timeless choice that helps you choose fall bridesmaid dresses with a darker palette to work with. And I would go even further with the palette to bring in the rich hues of the season.

Deep Forest Greens: Inspired by Evergreen Landscapes

For a late fall feel with a touch of regal warmth that borders on royal, I would pair deep and rich Emerald and Juniper tones to match the deep forest hues. Spend more time thinking of how to pair Juniper and Emerald for the bridesmaids so that we are not sub-consciously thinking of a tacky green and brown. Emerald is one of my more favorite bridal party colors as it brings that bright, rich complement for your bridal gown and Juniper is a great earthy neutral for that touch.

The rich green tones also have the advantage of adaptability. They can match well with an A-line bridesmaid dress or groomsman’s tie. If you're looking for a more luxurious appearance, Forest tones in fall wedding guest dresses with gold metallic accents such as jewelry or shoes are a great option. It maintains the perfect balance of wild and sophisticated.

Sunset Terracotta and Rust: The Warmth of Autumn Leaves

For those who are fans of the classic hues of the autumn leaves, burnt orange bridesmaid dresses are ideal. They capture the soft light of the golden hour and give a warm inviting glow to the wedding party. These colors are also flattering with almost any skin tone, and they add warmth that is often absent with cooler colors. They are the ideal choice for any autumn wedding color palette, and they seamlessly bridge the bright oranges of early fall with the deep browns of late fall.

When selecting warm tones for complementary elements, be sure to consider visual balance. Creating an impressive monochromatic look in Rust is a guarantee, but using various textures will really enhance your overall appearance. Rust satin is exquisite in that it has the ability to capture and reflect light, and Rust crepe finishes are more subtle and contemporary. Outdoor ceremonies in dried grass provide beautiful color contrasts in your photos, and when the backdrop includes shifting colors in maples, your images will effortlessly harmonize with the warm colors of the leaves.

Cabernet and Plum: Harvest-Inspired Jewel Tones

Every year burgundy bridesmaid dresses are a popular color for bridesmaid dresses for a lot of different reasons. One of the reasons is the color conveys a festive and expensive feel. Burgundy is also a color that goes good during the fall season since it is reminiscent of fine wines and dark berries. If you want to deepen that color scheme and create an even moodier palette for the bridal event, add Deep Plum to your palette. This color will provide more Multi-Dimensional feel to your bridal party color palette along with rich depth. I also like the added visual interest that can come from some bridesmaids wearing wine tones and others wearing deep purple. This look is more layered compared to a single solid color.

When it comes to these rich jewel tones, heavier fabrics are a perfect match. While chiffon is always a good choice, in fall there is an opportunity to use more weighted fabrics like Velvet and Stretch Crepe. Velvet will add an incredible amount of depth to your chosen hue, and will be wonderfully captivating in close-up photography. For outdoor ceremonies in the fall, velvet will be a perfect match for bridesmaids dresses due to the added warmth and drama it will provide. For indoor, well-heated venues, I suggest using a mix of velvet and lighter fabrics so bridesmaids can be comfortable.

Stormy Blue and Slate: Capturing the Crisp Autumn Sky

Not all fall weddings need to stick to warm tones; some of the best combinations use cool tones, inspired by the blue-grey overcast of a late afternoon. Ink Blue and Slate are a nice, sophisticated change to the usual reds and oranges of foliage. Think of bridesmaids in Slate blue dresses surrounded by bright, warm orange leaves. Striking and captivating, the blue and orange will offset one another beautifully.

Choosing blue will give you many options for wedding decor, with these tones easily combined in various ways, such as slate table linens and navy candles. This bold and trendy choice is a cool-tinted blue; the downside is that cool blues can be a bit stark. To keep a sense of warmth and intimacy, balance a cool blue with texture, such as really wild dark asymmetrical floral arrangements and wood.

Selecting the Perfect Fabrics for Your Autumn Palette

Once you've determined your wedding style, you can start thinking about materials. Different materials can change the look of a color. For example, emerald green velvet might look deep and mysterious, while emerald green satin could look bright and punchy. For a late season wedding, satin, while adding a lovely finish, would add warmth to the bridesmaids' dresses. For a stretchy, easy-to-dance-in look you may want to consider Stretch Crepe which has a clean, architectural style.

  • Velvet: Great outdoor choice for warmth and color depth.
  • Satin: For a sophisticated and formal look, satin has an exquisite, light-reflective finish.
  • Chiffon: A wonderful choice for an enchanting, airy movement, and even in darker colors.
  • Stretch Crepe: Perfect choice for bridesmaids who love a fitted look but want to prioritize their comfort.

Stylist Tips

Different fabrics would look better together so you might want to get multiple swatch samples. Depending on the screen, light, and the angle of your light source (like the light at your venue), different colors look different. Guide fabrics how your venue’s light will interact with it, and it will help you make a better decision.
